What is UHMWPE?

UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is a tough, low-friction plastic with high wear resistance, impact strength, and chemical resistance. It’s self-lubricating, moisture-resistant, and widely used in industrial applications like chute liners, wear strips, and conveyor components. Lightweight and easy to machine, it reduces friction and withstands extreme conditions.

What are the properties of UHMWPE?

  • Durability: UHMWPE is highly durable, offering exceptional wear resistance, impact strength, and chemical resistance, making it suitable for harsh environments and heavy-duty applications.
  • Chemical Resistance: UHMWPE has excellent chemical resistance, withstanding most acids, alkalis, and solvents, but it can be affected by strong oxidizers like nitric or sulfuric acid.
  • Weather Resistance: UHMWPE has good weather resistance, being UV-stable to some extent, but prolonged sun exposure can cause degradation without additives.
  • Versatility: UHMWPE is highly versatile, used in industries like mining, food processing, marine, and material handling due to its durability, low friction, and chemical resistance.
  • Low Moisture Absorption: Yes, UHMWPE has extremely low moisture absorption, making it ideal for wet environments and applications requiring dimensional stability.
  • Lightweight: UHMWPE is lightweight, with a density lower than water, allowing it to float and making it easy to handle and install.

Can UHMWPE handle heat?

UHMWPE has moderate heat resistance, with a continuous use temperature of around 80–100°C. It softens above this range and melts at approximately 130–140°C. While it can handle brief exposure to higher temperatures, prolonged heat weakens its structure.

Unlike high-temperature plastics like PTFE or PEEK, UHMWPE is not ideal for extreme heat applications. However, it performs well in cold environments, remaining tough and impact-resistant even at -200°C. For applications requiring higher heat resistance, alternative materials or UHMWPE blends with heat stabilizers may be needed.

Is UHMWPE Plastic suitable for Food Grade applications?

Yes, UHMWPE is suitable for food-grade applications due to the following reasons:

  • FDA & EU Compliance – Meets food safety regulations for direct contact with food.
  • Non-Toxic & Odorless – Does not contaminate food products.
  • Low Moisture Absorption – Prevents bacterial growth and maintains hygiene.
  • Chemical Resistance – Withstands cleaning agents and sanitizers without degradation.
  • Low Friction Surface – Reduces sticking and eases material flow in food processing.
  • High Wear Resistance – Durable for conveyor systems, cutting boards, and food equipment.
  • Temperature Limits – Suitable for cold and moderate heat applications but not for high-temperature cooking.
  • Easy to Machine & Maintain – Can be cut, shaped, and cleaned efficiently.

Common uses include conveyor components, cutting boards, wear strips, and food processing machinery parts. However, always verify specific grade compliance with industry standards.

How strong is UHMWPE?

UHMWPE is a strong and durable plastic with the following key properties:

  • High Impact Strength – Absorbs heavy impacts without cracking or breaking.
  • Excellent Wear Resistance – Outlasts many other plastics in abrasive environments.
  • Tensile Strength – Typically ranges from 20–40 MPa, lower than metals but sufficient for heavy-duty applications.
  • High Energy Absorption – Can withstand repeated stress and deformation without failure.
  • Self-Lubricating – Reduces friction and wear in moving parts.
  • Good Fatigue Resistance – Maintains strength under repeated load cycles.
  • Low Notch Sensitivity – Less prone to cracking or breaking under stress.

Commonly used in conveyor systems, chute liners, marine fenders, and impact-resistant parts. While strong for plastic, it is not as rigid as metals and may deform under excessive load.

Uses of UHMWPE Rod:

  • Conveyor components (guides, wear strips, rollers)

What is PEEK?

PEEK stands for PolyEther Ether Ketone.  PEEK is a colourless high-performance semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic. Also known as Ketron, LNP, KetaSpire, Sustapeek, Tecapeek.

What are the properties of PEEK?

  • Superior strength-to-weight ratio.
  • Creep-resistant.
  • Abrasion resistant.
  • Long-wearing, low wear and tear.
  • Withstands very high temperatures.
  • Radiation- and chemical-resistant.
  • Low water absorption.
  • Easy to machine and fabricate.

Is PEEK Plastic Rod Food Grade?

PEEK has FDA approval. This means it is safe for direct contact with delicate foods during the production process. For this reason, PEEK food handling components are used in both food packaging and food production processes.

How strong is PEEK?

Compared to metals such as aluminium and steel, PEEK has greater tensile strength. Furthermore, it can withstand prolonged exposure to high temperatures, harsh chemicals, and moisture. PEEK is a strong material with a GPa of 3.6 and a tensile strength of 90 to 100 MPa.

So it makes sense for engineers to consider PEEK material.  What’s more it is easily machinable and long lasting to replace heavier metal parts. Furthermore, with PEEK being a lighter material than metal parts, it can contribute to lower energy consumption.

How does PEEK wear?

PEEK machining rod has a great wearing capability, including adhesive, abrasive, corrosive, and surface-fatigue wear. Therefore, it makes sense to consider PEEK when you next need to replace bearings or seals as part of your regular machinery maintenance.  And then having that kind of reliability and safety means your improvement in productivity can be well worth the expense.

Can PEEK handle water and outdoor conditions?

With very low water absorption properties, PEEK is ideal for water applications even in high humidity.  Also, it is resistant to salt water and steam. (Note, however, PEEK is sensitive to UV Radiation which can cause the polymer to become brittle).  For applications that require high resistance to chemicals or voltage, PTFE Teflon Rod may also be suitable.

Uses of PEEK:

  • Bushings
  • Bearings
  • Seals
  • Back-up rings
  • Pump and valve components
  • Vacuum wand handles
  • Semiconductor machinery components
  • Electrical connectors
  • Medical and food manufacturing applications

What colour is PEEK Engineering Rod?

It is a “Natural” colour which is light brown/beige.

Environmental and end of life considerations

With PEEK being a thermoplastic, it has a very high melting temperature and combustion temperature is in excess of 600c.  Moreover, when exposed to flames, this engineering plastic rod emits little smoke or toxic gas fumes.  So is relatively safe to the environment.  PEEK can be broken down, reprocessed and recycled.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) Plastic Rod for engineering applications

PTFE Plastic Rod, readily known as Teflon™ is an engineering plastic that can handle high temperatures, has a high chemical resistance, and has the lowest coefficient of friction, in comparison with other plastics such as Nylon or Acetal.  The working temperature is around 250-260C and has a melting temperature of 327C.

PTFE is used for industrial applications that require sliding action.  Great for bearings, gears, slide plates.  Also has very good electrical insulation properties.  And can handle outdoor conditions.

Other uses:  Seals, Seats, Packing,

Also known as Teflon, Polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, Tetron.

Yes, Nylon is generally stronger than PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) in terms of tensile strength. Nylon has a higher tensile strength, typically around 70-90 MPa, compared to PTFE, which is around 20-30 MPa. Nylon is also more rigid and durable, making it suitable for load-bearing applications. PTFE, however, excels in chemical resistance, low friction, and high temperature tolerance. While PTFE is not as strong, it is often preferred for applications requiring non-stick properties, high temperature endurance, and chemical resistance, like in seals and gaskets.
Any piece of machinery that requires greater lubrication should be constructed with Teflon rather than nylon, since Teflon’s water-repellent properties make it a stronger lubricant.

What is the difference between PTFE and Teflon?

They are the same thing. Teflon is a brand name of PTFE which is a registered trademark owned by the Du Pont company.

The Ins and Outs of Acetal Rods

With its high tensile strength, rigidity, and versatility in application, it’s no wonder acetal rods are a favourite amongst engineers Australia-wide. Acetal, also known as polyoxymethylene, Delrin, ertacetal, and sustarin, is a synthetic polymer. What’s more this Plastic Rod has excellent chemical and fatigue resistance. Busy Bee Brushware is your local Aussie-owned and operated acetal rod suppliers. And we’re here to answer all your questions about acetal rods and give you the ins and outs of this incredibly functional plastic.

Acetal Plastic vs. Nylon Plastic

Both acetal and nylon have their advantages to engineers, and your choice will boil down to what you’re looking for from your plastic. Nylon plastic is an excellent replacement for metal components as it is self-lubricating, and it tends to be cheaper. Whereas, acetal presents a list of advantages that are difficult to overlook and provide excellent value for money. Some of the benefits of acetal are:

  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Low coefficient of friction
  • Great dimensional stability
  • Good electrical properties
  • Excellent machinability
  • Low porosity and moisture absorption
  • Superior tensile strength and stiffness
  • Great water resistance
  • Nylon can handle higher heat and pressure application

The Uses of Acetal Rods

Acetal is such a versatile thermoplastic material that it would be impossible to list all its applications on the one page. As your local acetal plastic rod supplier, Busy Bee Brushware has sold acetal to businesses using the material for a whole massive range of functions, such as:

  • Bearings
  • Washers
  • Fasteners
  • Gears
  • Wear strips and padding
  • Jigs
  • Buckles
  • Valves
  • Electrical parts and padding
  • Bushings
  • Manifolds
  • Rollers

Tips for Working with Acetal Rods

Busy Bee Brushware has come up with a few tips for working with acetal safely. These guidelines help reduce the risk of stress cracking and splitting.

  • Always use coolants. The heat generated by cutting tools can lead to the release of processing stresses.
  • When turning using carbide-tipped tools, deploy a clearance angle of 6-10 degrees, a positive rake angle of 0-5 degrees, and a side angle of 45-60 degrees.
  • Drill a pilot hole of maximum 12mm using 500-800rpm and a positive feed of 0.5mm per revolution. You may need to apply negative relief on the drill cutting edges.
  • Secondary drilling at 400-500rpm at 0.20mm to 0.50mm per revolution is required to expand the hole to larger diameters to accommodate a boring bar.
  • When boring and turning, we recommend a feed rate of 0.10mm to 0.30mm.
