The ROCK OFF Caravan Stone Guard Brush – Hitch Mount Kit is designed to reduce stone damage, road spray, and debris thrown up while towing.
Mounted directly to the tow hitch, the brush creates a flexible barrier that absorbs impact before stones reach your caravan, camper, or trailer.

Unlike rigid guards, the brush moves with the road and towing conditions. It’s tough, low-maintenance, and suitable for sealed and unsealed roads. Ideal for touring, off-road travel, and everyday towing.

How to Choose the Right ROCK OFF Kit – 5 Simple Steps

STEP 1 – Check your tow hitch size
Confirm your vehicle uses a standard 50mm tow hitch receiver.

STEP 2 – Measure available clearance
Ensure there is enough room on the tongue of your Hitch to hold the Hitch Mount receiver bracket.  We have 2 sizes of receiver, 40mmm and 65mm.

STEP 3 – Measure your mounting height

Take your height measurements at a time when your towing vehicle and caravan or trailer is fully loaded — this will ensure any suspension systems you have in place are considered.

Measure from the ground to the mark where the top of your ROCK OFF Hitch Mount will be located. Deduct 100mm for road clearance and a further 50mm allowance for the backing of the brush and Mounting rail, total 150mm. This will provide the ideal bristle length option for your vehicle.

Remember that our drop down options shows the “bristle length”, so you will need to allow 50mm for the brush backing when you choose. If unsure, choose your ROCK OFF at the shorter measurement – you can always lower your fitting later.  If your ROCK OFF bristle is too long, it is difficult to trim.

STEP 4 – Exhaust considerations

Keep exhaust flow and heat away from ROCK OFF. This product performs best when installed with plenty of distance away from your vehicle’s exhaust outlet. ROCK OFF is made from tough Polypropylene fibre, but it can be damaged by exhaust heat build-up.

Exhaust Shield and Extension Kits are available to allow free flow of your exhaust heat away from your towing vehicle. Alternatively, consider modifying your vehicle’s exhaust system to a side-exit style.

Recommended mounting positions:

For towing vehicles with a straight exhaust outlet: Consider mounting ROCK OFF underneath the exhaust pipe.

For towing vehicles with a downward-facing exhaust outlet:
Consider our Exhaust Extension Kit. Particularly if your exhaust outlet is less than 450mm from your intended ROCK OFF Mounting.

STEP 5 – Other considerations

Aftermarket accessories (mudflaps, chains, Anderson plugs, auxiliary fittings etc) may need consideration when determining the mounting height and bristle length of your ROCK OFF.

Note – chain-attached vehicle mud flaps are not recommended as these can cause stones to bounce underneath your ROCK OFF and strike your caravan.

Check access to accessories and auxiliary fittings such as Anderson plugs and reversing lights. These accessories may have components or cables which may impact your mounting position. If possible, mount ROCK OFF underneath or above these fittings to ensure easy access.

1. Your bristle length should be at least 145mm shorter than the distance from the top of your mounting point to the road when fully loaded
2. Measure the distance between the top of the mounting point on your vehicle, caravan or trailer, and the road
3. Deduct at least 100mm for road clearance and a further 45mm for the brush backing, total 145mm
4. For example, if your total distance from mounting point to the road surface is 400mm, then you will need a bristle length of 250mm, and your clearance to the road would be 105mm

Straight pipes are ideal and do not typically require an Exhaust Kit option. This applies to straight exhaust pipes either above the brush mounting area or side pipes facing away from the mounting.

Angled exhaust pipes (within 150mm of brush mounting are):

When your pipes are angled downwards and within 150mm of the brush mounting area, choose our Exhaust Shield Plate.  This fitting has stainless steel open shield plate to be fitted in front of your exhaust pipe so exhaust heat and fumes are drawn into the open area and away from your vehicle. Towing Brush Strip bristles are individually stapled and can be removed with pliers to accommodate fitting the Exhaust Shield Plate over the Stainless Steel Rails and in front of your exhaust pipe. Your Exhaust Shield Plate is fitted with a smaller piece of Towing Brush Strip to cover the gap under the plate.

Angled Exhaust Pipes (150-500mm from brush mounting area):

Further, if your exhaust pipes angled downwards and located between 150mm and 500mm (max) away from the brush mounting area, choose our Exhaust Extension Kit. The Exhaust Extension Kit includes Exhaust Shield Plate plus 500mm of Stainless Steel Truck Flex Tube in sizes 2.5″ (60mm) or 3″ (76mm). Truck Flex Tube allows fitting over your exhaust pipe with exit via the opening in the Exhaust Shield Plate. Also includes a coupling to fit over your exhaust pipe, and a stainless steel fitting to keep Flex Tube in place. This allows exhaust gases to flow away from under vehicle and not impact Towing Brush.

• Always measure when your vehicle is fully loaded
• Your bristle length should be at least 150mm shorter than the distance from the top of your mounting point to the road
• Measure the distance between the top of the mounting point on your vehicle and the road
• Deduct at least 100mm for road clearance, and a further 50mm for the brush backing and rails. That totals 150mm
• For example, if your total distance from mounting point to the road surface is 400mm, then you will need a bristle length of 250mm
• TIP – you are better to use spacers or packers to drop the brush down. This will be easier than to purchase a longer bristle length and try to trim the bristle!!)

NOTE: ROCK OFF^® Towing Brush Strip is a Polypropylene (plastic) construction and must be mounted well clear of your exhaust pipe to avoid damage. Heat from the exhaust pipe and hot fumes can distort the bristles.

For best results, mount the brush under the exhaust or behind the exhaust.

Straight exhaust pipes:

Straight pipes are ideal and do not typically require an Exhaust Kit option. This applies to straight exhaust pipes either above the brush mounting area or side pipes facing away from the mounting.

Angled exhaust pipes (within 150mm of brush mounting are):

When your pipes are angled downwards and within 150mm of the brush mounting area, choose our Exhaust Shield Plate.  This fitting has stainless steel open shield plate to be fitted in front of your exhaust pipe so exhaust heat and fumes are drawn into the open area and away from your vehicle. Towing Brush Strip bristles are individually stapled and can be removed with pliers to accommodate fitting the Exhaust Shield Plate over the Stainless Steel Rails and in front of your exhaust pipe. Your Exhaust Shield Plate is fitted with a smaller piece of Towing Brush Strip to cover the gap under the plate.

Angled Exhaust Pipes (150-500mm from brush mounting area):

Further, if your exhaust pipes angled downwards and located between 150mm and 500mm (max) away from the brush mounting area, choose our Exhaust Extension Kit. The Exhaust Extension Kit includes Exhaust Shield Plate plus 500mm of Stainless Steel Truck Flex Tube in sizes 2.5″ (60mm) or 3″ (76mm). Truck Flex Tube allows fitting over your exhaust pipe with exit via the opening in the Exhaust Shield Plate. Also includes a coupling to fit over your exhaust pipe, and a stainless steel fitting to keep Flex Tube in place. This allows exhaust gases to flow away from under vehicle and not impact Towing Brush.

Busy Bee Brushware has developed the ROCK OFF® Caravan Stone Guard Brush – to help stop rocks kicking up and damaging your vehicle of caravan.  Fitted behind your 4WD vehicle mud flaps, ROCK OFF acts as a secondary line of defence against stones and bounce-back.

How frustrating for Aussie Travellers – their shiny new caravan, camper or boat peppered with unsightly dings and stone chips? And how often do you hear that someone’s travel experience has been set back by stones bouncing back and smashing the back window of their vehicle?

ROCK OFF® Caravan Stone Guard – brush that you mount under your vehicle. Or fit to the back of your 4WD vehicle.  Protects your Caravan from stone kick up when you are on the dirt highways. Our unique bristle design of our brush strip allows for greater airflow and less drag than traditional mud flaps.

What is it?

Your ROCK OFF is Polypropylene plastic fibre manufactured into heavy duty HDPE backing. (High Density Polypropylene).  The backing is 45mm high and 25mm thick.  And the bristles are “staple-punched” in a 2-row staggered pattern – provides a strong and dense bristle brush.  Often used as a spray suppressant brush for farming and harvesting machinery. Fitted behind your vehicle means that stones and rocks kicked up from the gravel road hit the brush and deflect back down to the road.  Helps to stop stone chip damage to the front of your caravan.

Comes in a range of sizes and bristle lengths to fit at the back of your vehicle or under your caravan for good protection while travelling in the Australian Outback.

What Makes The ROCK OFF Stone Guard For Caravans Different From Mudflaps?

There are a few critical differences between ROCK OFF stone guard for caravans and traditional mud flaps.

• Less drag. ROCK OFF’s brushes are far lighter than mud flaps, allowing greater airflow and creating less drag.
• Absorbs impact. Mudflaps tend to bounce stones off in unpredictable directions, whereas ROCK OFF’s bristles absorb the impact of the rocks, taking the force out of them.

ROCK OFF caravan stone guards is also different from spray suppressants. Spray suppressants are traditionally found on trucks, trailers, and buses. They’re designed to reduce the amount of water picked up by trucks, thereby improving visibility for other road users. ROCK OFF camper trailer stone guard has softer bristles, more flexible backing, and is far stronger than spray suppressants as it was developed to absorb the impact of rocks.

Fitting tips for your ROCK OFF®

A couple of tips we can give you:

• HDPE plastic does not have a grain.  This means that, even though it is a very solid backing, it does flex. So you will need a Metal Angle bracket or C channel for structural support, particularly when you are mounting onto the back of your vehicle.  Without the structural support, you may experience vibration or shuddering at higher speeds.
• You can easily mount the brush. Just mark and drill the backing of the brush that is above where the tufts are stapled. Then you can bolt the brush to the Metal structural support.
• Measure the overall drop from where you plan to mount the Brush. Then take off 100mm for clearance to the road. And take off 45mm for the backing of the brush.  That will be the “brush trim length” that you need to go with

• Customer’s feedback is that the brush can be mounted with anywhere from 75mm to 150mm clearance from the road.

Exhaust Considerations

• Remember this is a plastic bristle brush, so needs to be mounted away from the exhaust pipe.  Both the heat of the exhaust pipe and the hot fumes that come from it can distort the bristles.  If you can mount the brush under the exhaust or behind the exhaust that is the best option. We recommend you contact a local exhaust specialist for advice.
• Your ROCK OFF® Towing Brush Strip can also be cut into pieces and mounted under the caravan.  Then it acts as a secondary protection zone for your caravan’s pipework.  Mark the area of the backing where you wish to cut; using pliers remove one of the brush tufts underneath and that will give you sufficient clearance to use a saw to cut the backing.

Tips for Installing the Stone Guard for a Caravan

While we recommend going to a mechanic, car specialist, or fitter to help you attach ROCK OFF caravan stone deflector to your vehicle, we have some tips for those wanting to try it themselves.

• When Busy Bee Brushware refers to ‘brush trim’, we are talking about the exact length of the bristle. So, when measuring for length, you’ll need to take into account the brush trim and the length of the backing.
• Make sure to mount the brush anywhere that has 100mm to 200mm clearance from the road.
• As the plastic bristles on ROCK OFF’s stone guard for caravans aren’t heat resistant, you’ll need to mount the brush away from the exhaust pipe. Failure to do so will result in distortion of the bristles and inconsistency in regards to effectiveness.
